A NEW TREND: Integrating Technology into Worktops
Integrating technology into worktops has been a popular choice for most kitchen designs throughout 2025 into 2026. With busy lifestyles and increasing technology capabilities there are plenty of ways to make day to day life simpler using this new technology. Find out how you can integrate technology into your new worktops to create a modern, family kitchen.
What technology can be included in worktops?
There’s so many decisions to make when deciding on the final plan for your kitchen! Don’t forget to think about the following ideas to see whether they would be practical for daily life in and around your space.
Working from home
Many of us have started working from home allowing a better work life balance, reducing commuting time and costs. However not all our homes are set up for this popular new choice. We have been incorporating more and more plug sockets in worksurfaces and waterfall ends allowing you to access charging points with ease. Whether you prefer the simple socket look or a modern, round pop up- a plug socket in the worksurface is a useful addition to the design!
Circular phone charging pads can also be easily integrated into your worktop space. Simply place your phone on the pad while you’re cooking!

Variations of hobs
The most popular piece of technology is the induction hob which can be flush mounted within your worktop. A key feature in your kitchen which looks seamless, minimalist and allows for easy home cooking. There is a new style of hob which has recently become available called an invisible induction home hob. This hob is hidden beneath the surface and connects to your pans on the surface. This is more of an aesthetically pleasing design but not always the most practical!

Back Lit Quartz
Another new feature our suppliers have brough out is the black lit quartz ranges. They light up the room and are beautiful stand out pieces. There are certain quartz materials which have been designed to be translucent. Prior to install , strip lights applied to the walls/ surfaces which the worktops will be set off of. Once installed, with a click of a switch you can watch your worktops come to life! BQS Lumen Ice back lit quartz is on display in our showroom, pop in to view the full effect of back lit quartz. We have also recently installed the BQS Aurora Dune backlit quartz as a splashback in the NEW Sterlingdale and Caterbitz Showroom in Wimborne, Dorset.

LED Lighting and Ambience
LED strip lighting can also be integrated into worksurfaces. We are able to cut a small channel on the overhang of the underside of the worktop which is suitable for strip lighting. Change the ambience of your space with this beautiful feature which can be easily turned on by a switch on your wall. Many customers choose to integrate this into their main cabinetry but there is an option to add this to your worksurfaces for that kitchen glow! View this option on display in our showroom in Wareham.
The benefits of including technology in your workspaces
Integrating technology into worksurfaces isn’t just about trying to create the modern look- it changes how the space functions day to day. The trick is to get the space to work with you and ensure it’s suitable for how you use your kitchen. Incorporating a phone charging pad in your worksurface saves you looking round for a charging cable. Having an induction hob which sits flush with your worktop increases cooking efficiency, making the process smoother and more enjoyable. Hidden or pop-up features keep surfaces tidy with fewer gadgets and cables lying on the surfaces, making more compact kitchens seem more capable. Your worktops can act as a hub, and integrating technology in this can transform how the space feels.
Will integrating technology into your home increase property appeal?
Well integrated technology will help increase property appeal if you come to sell your house. With continually improving technology in the modern world it is becoming more and more used and desired around family homes to make everyday life more simple. It makes homes feel more modern and premium, attracting buyers looking for future-ready spaces. Not all tech adds value, but the right features installed in the right way definitely will.
The benefits are strongest when the technology is seamless or invisible, simple and reliable and actually used daily. If it’s flashy but rarely used it quickly becomes a gimmick.

What are the most common mistakes when integrating technology into your kitchen?
Some people assume the more tech the better. The biggest mistakes often come from overcomplicating something that should stay simple and durable. Trying to include everything often ruins usability, if it wont get used regularly we would advise not building it in! The most important quality of a kitchen is to function easily, it is the most used room in the house so it has to be easy to work with.
Another common mistake is poor positioning of these luxuries. Things like placing charging pads where spills are likely to happen, or too far away to be used in prep areas.
Tech ages faster than kitchens so ensure you are ‘future proofing’ with updated technology to save having to replace it! Kitchens are also harsh environments and cheap components fail quickly in these conditions! Make sure you choose your components wisely and seal them properly to avoid damage. Consider whether it can be repaired or replaced easily so that if your tech gets damaged you won’t have to remove or replace the worktop!
Tech needs to be planned early and not a last minute thought! Remember you will require routing for cables, access and ventilation that don’t conflict with plumbing or the structure within your kitchen.

Things to remember when integrating technology into your worksurfaces
Remember your worktop is firstly a workspace. Keep it durable, easy to repair and useful for everyday tasks and cooking! A family kitchen is continually in use, ensure it’s child friendly and will stand up to everyday life. Your kitchen is also your most used social space when hosting guests so make sure the worktops aren’t overcrowded. You want to host in style!
